The Old Forester brand was introduced in 1870 by George Garvin Brown and named for Dr. William Forrester, a customer of Brown's (the second "r" was later dropped). This Kentucky Straight Bourbon is made from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. This 86-proof bourbon is the brand's entry level product.

Nose: Top notes of orange blossom and cedar. Soon develops the classic rye bread warmth and a lingering waft of buttered pancakes.

Palate: Starts quite sweet with caramel and maple syrup, though swiftly develops intense oak-y elements and hints of pine resin. Sweetness returns slightly on the mid-palate.

Finish: Juicy orange and spicy oak continue on the finish.

The brand's founder, George Garvin Brown, moved to Louisville in 1863 for high school and eventually became a pharmaceutical salesman. And it was this particular job that led him to create Old Forester in 1870. He named it after Dr. William Forrester. To ensure consistency, George batched bourbon from three nearby distilleries: Mattingly, Mellwood and Atherton. He sealed his whiskey exclusively in glass bottles and signed each bottle as a personal guarantee of its quality.

In 1897, in order to comply with the regulations specified by the American Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, Old Forester increased the spirit grades from 90 proof to 100 proof. The law also required bourbon to come from one distillery and one distilling season, so George Garvin Brown purchased the Mattingly Distillery in 1901.

Old Forester was one of the few companies allowed to sell and produce whiskey during Prohibition in the 1920s. This is the only bourbon that was sold before, during, and after Prohibition.
