The James E. Pepper brand of whiskey is an iconic Kentucky whiskey that was originally produced during the American Revolution and continued until 1967. The family built and operated two major distilleries: first establishing the site that now hosts Woodford Reserve Distillery, and later James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington. In the late 1960s, hard times hit the bourbon industry, and both the brand and the Lexington distillery were abandoned for more than half a century.

In 2008, the brand was relaunched by whiskey entrepreneur Amir Peay. A decade-long campaign of historical research and material gathering was used to retell the brand's lost story and distill new stocks of "Pepper" whiskey. Partnerships were formed with the Lawrenceburg Distillery in Indiana and the Bardstown Bourbon Co. in Kentucky to initiate the brand's relaunch. Today, some of the whiskeys contain whiskey distilled at these distilleries.

After a multi-year construction effort, the historic James E. Pepper Distillery was completely rebuilt and restored. In December 2017, the distillery began distilling whiskey again using the same historic recipe as when it closed.
